How to effectively use digital marketing for your small business

If you’re a new or small business who has seen some success, you might be thinking - How can I increase my sales? What can I do to reach the next level?

Enter digital marketing.

Digital marketing isn’t a set of buzz words or department reserved for large businesses, it’s a way of understanding your customer so you can increase your sales, improve your brand awareness and ultimately, improve your product so your business can continue growing. It also isn’t an exact science as much as any expert my want you to believe. It’s a mix of A/B testing and research that requires you to really hone in on your product, your customer and the market in which you’re operating in.

A common misconception is that you need a large budget to dabble in marketing and to do proper A/B testing. That just isn’t true. With marketing tech like Hubspot, SproutSocial and even Facebook Business offering free or low cost options, your small business can leverage marketing at any budget and start seeing results in the form of sales.

So where should you start as a small business who wants to get their feet wet with marketing? First set a specific goal you want to achieve? Looking to grow sales by a $,1000 over the next month? Let’s take a look at your product and inventory? What’s selling? What isn’t?

Next form a hypothesis based on the customer and your product and design a test that you think will be most impactful. Is your customer spending the majority of their time on TikTok and Instagram? Maybe you want to create content to promote your product for those channels and see what drives the most traffic to your website? Or maybe email seems to be converting best and you want to test out new subject lines? The key is to come up with an objective, a hypothesis and a marketing channel you want to give a go.
